Background of the Study
Teaching hospitals in Nigeria, particularly those affiliated with tertiary institutions, play a central role in healthcare delivery, medical education, and research. These hospitals are crucial in training healthcare professionals and providing specialized medical services to the public. However, they face significant financial management challenges due to insufficient funding, inadequate budgeting, and inefficient resource utilization. Financial management strategies are essential for the sustainability of these hospitals, and there is a need to assess how these institutions manage their financial resources. In Kano State, a state with a mix of teaching hospitals and other healthcare institutions, understanding the financial strategies employed by tertiary healthcare institutions will provide insights into best practices and areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem
Teaching hospitals in Kano State often operate under financial constraints, which impact their ability to offer quality care, pay staff, and maintain infrastructure. A comparison of the financial management strategies of different teaching hospitals will reveal how these institutions handle resource allocation, budgeting, and cost control. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of financial management strategies employed by teaching hospitals in Kano State and identify challenges that hinder their financial sustainability.

  1. To compare the financial management strategies employed by teaching hospitals in Kano State.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of these strategies in ensuring financial sustainability and quality healthcare delivery.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving financial management practices in teaching hospitals in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the financial management strategies employed by teaching hospitals in Kano State?

  2. How effective are these financial management strategies in ensuring the sustainability of teaching hospitals?

  3. What improvements can be made to financial management practices in teaching hospitals in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Teaching hospitals in Kano State employ different financial management strategies with varying degrees of effectiveness.

  2. Financial management strategies significantly impact the sustainability and quality of care in teaching hospitals in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on tertiary healthcare institutions in Kano State that function as teaching hospitals. It will assess financial management strategies, including budgeting, funding sources, and expenditure control. Limitations of the study may include variations in the scope of financial reporting between hospitals and the availability of detailed financial data.
